Planning for the Future: Retirement and Succession – DDLMC Update Event

Planning ahead for retirement, partnership changes and primary care premises is an important part of ensuring the long-term future of general practice. Our latest DDLMC Update Event brought delegates together at Casa Hotel, Chesterfield, to explore these topics with specialist advice from BWH Surveyors and BHP Chartered Accountants.

Hosted by DDLMC Practice Liaison Officer Hayley Scott and Communications and Engagement Officer Lily Southern, the event provided an opportunity for delegates to gain practical insights, ask questions and consider the issues that may affect their own practices.

An update from DDLMC

The event began with an update from Hayley Scott, who highlighted current areas of DDLMC activity, developments taking place behind the scenes and upcoming topics for practices to look out for.

Keeping practices informed about relevant developments and providing opportunities to access advice and support remain important parts of DDLMC's work.

Planning for the future of primary care premises

James Williams MRICS, Director of BWH Surveyors, delivered a session exploring the role of premises in the future planning of general practice.

The session covered maximising property value, considerations relating to the existing primary care estate and potential funding options. These are important considerations for practices looking to plan ahead, particularly when reviewing their premises arrangements or preparing for future changes.

Retirement, succession and partnership changes

Following lunch, Conor Fields, Healthcare Director, and Jenny Hurst, Healthcare Partner, from BHP Chartered Accountants led a session examining the practical and financial implications of partnership changes.

Topics included considerations for retiring and incoming partners, preparing for partner transitions and changes in property ownership.

Planning for succession can involve a range of financial and practical decisions. The session provided an opportunity for delegates to explore these issues with specialists and consider the factors that may be relevant to their own circumstances.

Sharing knowledge and supporting practices

Throughout the event, delegates had the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers, ask questions and discuss issues relevant to their practices.

We would like to thank James Williams, Conor Fields and Jenny Hurst for sharing their expertise, as well as everyone who attended and contributed to the discussions.

At DDLMC, we recognise the importance of helping practices access relevant information, specialist knowledge and opportunities to discuss the challenges facing general practice. Our update events are one of the ways we aim to support practices as they navigate important decisions and plan for the future.

Join us at our next Retirement and Succession event

Following the success of our latest session, we will be holding our next Retirement and Succession – Planning for the Future event on Wednesday 3 February 2027 at The Farmhouse, Mackworth.

If you are considering retirement, planning a partnership change or looking to understand more about the future of your practice premises, this event will provide another opportunity to explore these topics and hear from specialist speakers.
