Interim Chief Executive Officer, LMC Medical Director, LMC

Dr Ben Milton qualified from Newcastle in 1996 and started the journey south. After PRHO jobs in Hull he completed a surgical rotation in Wakefield and then further posts in Leeds and York with a view to becoming an ENT surgeon. Throughout this he remained a generalist at heart and realised that a career in surgery wouldn’t provide the relationships and professional satisfaction he was after, so he moved to Derbyshire in 2001 and completed the Chesterfield VTS scheme in 2003 before heading straight into partnership at Darley Dale.

An early involvement in Practice Based Commissioning, initially with the High and Dales PCT and then latterly Derbyshire County PCT, built an interest in commissioning and, with the publication of the Lansley white paper in 2010, the subsequent development of CCGs. Dr Ben Milton was Chair of NDCCG in shadow form from 2011 taking it successfully through authorisation to become a statutory body in 2013 and on until the formation of Derby and Derbyshire CCG in 2019.

Increasing competition for his time made the collective responsibilities of clinician, partner and CCG Chair increasingly challenging and so in 2016 he took the difficult decision to step down from his partnership. For the last 6 years he has enjoyed working as a locum GP across several practices, gaining experience of different teams and the patients they serve. For the last 18 months he has been a salaried GP at Eyam Surgery.

During his time as a GP he has been Foundation programme clinical supervisor and has several clinical interests. More recently he has focussed on developing skills in health coaching to improve communication with his patients and was the Clinical Champion for patient centred care at the RCGP from 2018-2021.

Practice Liaison Team

Hayley Scott, Practice Liaison Officer

Hayley Scott is one of the Practice Liaison officers at Derby & Derbyshire LMC. She has very recently joined DDLMC after working at Health Education Derbyshire Training hub and before that in a rural dispensing practice in Derbyshire for 10 years. Her back ground before General Practice was as a Branch Manager for the Derbyshire Building Society.

During her time as a Practice Manager the LMC supported her with a variety of questions, challenges and training needs. She aspired to one day join their team, and feels extremely fortunate to get the opportunity to give something back. She is passionate about General Practice and supporting practices to help ensure General Practice remains independent, robust and has a voice.

As PLOs, they are here to help support you with queries, investigate contracts, find you information and signpost you to the most appropriate person as quickly as they can. She would like to be the person you can ask any question, and know that she will do her uppermost to answer you. No matter how small or how big, the PLOs are here for you and your practice.

Personally, she is a busy Mum and wife, and spends much of her time being “Mums’ taxi service”. She enjoys being outdoors and appreciates the beauty of nature.

Susanne Croll, Practice Liaison and Contracts Officer

Susanne Croll has 21 years of primary care experience and is hoping that she can draw upon this to help support the practices across Derby and Derbyshire. She started out in a practice in a severely deprived area of Nottingham as a data clerk and then moved into the CCG which opened her eyes to the world of commissioning and procurement. Having missed working in practice, she decided it was time to return so she moved into practice management. She has worked in both affluent and deprived areas which bring different and various challenges!

Her passion is ensuring that practices are supported with anything they need to make day to day life a little easier whilst understanding what is needed to succession plan for the future protection of primary care.

Please give her a shout if you need help, support or just to ask a question. She has more than likely been there already!
