Occupational Health Update - GP Staff

You may be aware that the existing Occupational Health contract with United Hospitals Derby and Burton NHS Trust for Derbyshire GP's ended on the 31st March 2023 following notification from the Trust to say that they could no longer offer this service.

As an interim measure, NHSE/I GP Contracting team have commissioned an Occupational Health Services for Derbyshire GP's. The service will be provided by the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. This is an interim arrangement whilst a longer term solution is secured.

Please find attached the following templates for new starters that are to be completed by primary care providers when they refer into this service:

  1. Clinical Role – for clinicians with patient contact GPs, Dentists etc
  2. Non-Clinical Role – for other practice staff e.g admin staff
  3. Management Referral – for advice / suggestions relating to staff and their working environment etc

The process is as indicated on the forms and once complete, they should be emailed directly to the Occupational Health teams generic mailbox rwh-tr.occupationalhealthrwh@nhs.net

Royal Wolverhampton would like practices to note the following:

  1. Practices have to use the attached forms as it asks the questions that OH would ask and it saves time
  2. Blood tests can be taken closer to where the staff member resides / works, but OH cannot send out the blood forms as their forms correspond with the services within RWT.
  3. If you have the vaccination history, this helps speeds things up and often the patient doesn’t need to travel for a face to face appointment as they can advise over the phone
  4. DNA’s will be charged for, unless 24hours notice is given (e.g. if the appointment is on a Monday, then a cancellation must be received by RWT on the Friday before by 09:30am, otherwise a fee is due)

With regard to sharps injuries, the member of practice staff (general practice, community pharmacy, dentistry & optometry) can contact the Occupational Health team directly via telephone: 01902 695450 or email: rwh-tr.occupationalhealthrwh@nhs.net to arrange to be seen.

The service core hours are Monday – Friday 8.30am – 16.30.

A reminder of ‘who pays’ for the Occupational Health service in summary form has been attached for your information.
