OPEL Scoring – Reflecting Realistic Pressures This Winter

Dear Colleagues,

As we move deeper into the winter period, we are writing jointly to encourage all practices to ensure that their OPEL scoring accurately reflects the current pressures being experienced, including those arising from online consultations.

We recognise the immense effort practices are making to maintain safe working conditions and deliver high-quality care. However, it is important that this does not result in under-reporting of operational strain. Reporting ‘green’ when pressures are significant, particularly due to increased demand through digital channels, can inadvertently mask the challenges you are facing.

OPEL scores are shared across the system and play a vital role in informing discussions around winter funding and resource allocation. Realistic and honest scoring helps us advocate effectively for the support practices need and ensures that system-level responses are proportionate and targeted.

We ask that you consider the full scope of pressures, including workforce constraints, patient demand, and digital workload, when completing your OPEL assessments. Your input is essential to shaping a responsive and supportive winter strategy.

Thank you for your continued commitment and collaboration.

Warm regards,

Dr Andy Mott GPPB Medical Director,

Dr Ben Milton Medical Director DD LMC
