DAILY COVID-19 BRIEFING DDLMC – 28.04.2020

NATIONAL UPDATES

Wellbeing: Following on from Claire’s And Finally yesterday, a reminder about some of the resources available to you:

#LookingAfterYouToo: Coaching support for primary care staff. To provide an easy to access, individually tailored coaching support service for frontline primary care staff that focuses on proactively supporting people through COVID-19, by providing opportunities to process experiences, develop coping skills, deal with difficult conversations, and develop strategies for self-management in difficult circumstances. https://people.nhs.uk/lookingafteryoutoo

"Beyond Coaching" which is offering access to free self-coaching and resilience toolkits for NHS staff, https://beyond-coaching.co.uk/nhs-online-toolkit

LOCAL UPDATES

Homeless population placed at Pride Park and County Hotel (J29) The service is also available for homeless residents who have been placed in the hotel at Pride Park to access appointments in primary care following triage due to the lack of public transport from Pride Park to the City Centre. A similar arrangement is also being looked at for the residents in the hotel in the North of the County (J29). The CCG is liaising with the Councils to understand the existing primary care services for this group of the homeless population who have been placed in the two hotels and further information will follow as this work progresses this week.

Any feedback (and questions) on the service would be really appreciated to Hannah Belcher at the CCG Hannah.Belcher@nhs.net

Shielded Patients. We have been contacted by a number of practices expressing concerns about the volume of work implied by the guidance from NHSE on Friday requesting them to contact all shielded patients. We’d like to remind all practices that contractually you “must deliver services required for the management of the Contractor’s registered patients and temporary residents who are, ill with conditions from which recovery is generally expected; terminally ill; or suffering from chronic disease, delivered in the manner determined by the practice in discussion with the patient.” The guidance is therefore a request and since you know your patients, you will be able to target those patients you need to call as opposed to those patients you may contact by putting a message on your website or sending a text message to. I re-iterate it is down to the practice to decide how to manage this cohort of patients.

practices have also been telling patients that they are not in the clinically extremely vulnerable group of people, but then telling them to follow shielding rules. Please be clear that anyone who genuinely needs to shield (as opposed to social distancing) should be classed as clinically extremely vulnerable and coded as such to allow them to access the additional support.

OTHER UPDATES

Webinar: RCGP and the AHSN Network are hosting a webinar on the role of physiology and oximetry in patient assessment of COVID-19 and the role of NEWS 2. It will be led by RCGP Honorary Secretary and COVID Lead Dr Jonathan Leach, with Dr Alison Tavaré, Primary Care Clinical Lead at West of England AHSN, and Dr Simon Stockley, RCGP Lead for Acute Deterioration and Sepsis.

The webinar will be held on Wednesday 29 April, 1.30-2.30pm and you can register here . The webinar will be recorded and shared afterwards.

KEY MESSAGES TO THE PUBLIC

Health at Home Campaign. The NHS has launched the Health at Home campaign, which signposts the public to useful information about how to contact their GP, have a successful online or video consultation, order repeat prescriptions, manage their wellbeing and existing conditions – without leaving their home.

Yeyenta Osasu from the CCG has produced the attached “Active at Home” booklet to support people with activities at home, as part of her fellowship programme.

AND FINALLY…

Its Wednesday tomorrow so our weekly webinar will take place at 11:00am.

Trees. I won’t embarrass the GP in question by sharing his name following his truly awful response to the tree jokes which frankly sapped all my energy……”Take a bough sir, I can't be-leaf how bad your (j)oaks are but fir me the branching out of the "and finally" section always raises a smile.” Thanks Ben (Dales PCN CD).

Wayne W Dyer was affectionately called the “father of motivation” by his fans, whose main message was that every person has the potential to live an extraordinary life. Although I’m not generally a fan of social media I found this quote on Facebook “Peace is the result of retraining your mind to process life as it is, rather than as you think it should be.” Wouldn’t it be great if we could all achieve that in the current crazy world.
