Encourage school students to consider careers in Primary Healthcare with I’m a Medic, Get me out of here!
I’m a Medic, Get me out of here, an online outreach competition aiming to boost the number of young people from local areas applying for careers in medicine and healthcare is open for applications. On the imamedic.uk website, school students get to meet healthcare professionals in general practice, ask them questions about their work and find out about careers in Primary Healthcare. See what happened in the recent event in November.
We are looking for a variety of Primary Healthcare professionals from the region to support the next event taking place between 5th-16th March . Please register your interest by 29th January.
NHS Health Education East Midlands are funding the event, in partnership with the Universities of Nottingham and Leicester and Derby & Derbyshire LMC, to target schools in the East Midlands, areas with serious shortages of doctors and some of the lowest application rates for medicine in the UK
Dr Paul Garrud, Chair of Selection for the Medical Schools Council and Hon. Associate Professor, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham, said: "Our country and our region need more doctors to serve our communities. We wish to encourage young people who might not have considered medicine before. I encourage you to take part in this innovative project to inspire youngsters about primary care and encourage them to train as practitioners.”
Kit Tigwell, a trainee GP who took part in November’s event, said “This was a great event and I really enjoyed taking part! The whole thing was extremely well organised.”
In the event, healthcare professionals put up a profile on the site and answer students’ questions about their work, background, career, the universe and beyond. Students also get to challenge the healthcare professionals in live text based chats and then vote for their favourite participant to win £500 to spend on further public engagement.
