Registered Patients Using Walk in Services in Other Practices
Registered patients requesting appointments at other practices outside of extended access arrangements;
Within Derbyshire, we have had some recent examples of patients who are registered at a Derbyshire practice and who are trying to access walk in services at other local practices within their area. Can we remind practices that this does not fall under temporary resident status as the patient has not had a change to their home address and they are already accessing essential services within their local registered practice.
If this occurs the patient should be referred back to their registered practice or if the patient is within the practice catchment, they may choose to fully register at the new practice, they cannot register as a temporary patient.

Free portable 1-lead ECG devices for GPs – preventing strokes in the East Midlands
GP practices in Derbyshire are being offered free portable ECG devices with compatible smartphones in a bid to significantly increase the detection of a condition known as Atrial Fibrillation - a huge and often ‘silent’ risk factor for developing a stroke. Also offered is funding of four hours of practice nurse time to help embed regular AF testing within practices and facilitate the training of staff.
For more information on how to receive free ECG devices, a smartphone and nurse funding, GP practices can contact their local Clinical Commissioning Group or call the EMAHSN on 0115 748 4258 or email email@example.com.

NHS England announced this week that it is again running a winter indemnity scheme this year to support GPs who wish to offer additional extended access and/or out of hours sessions over the winter season. The scheme, running from 1 October to 31 March next year, will be used to provide indemnity for the extra services provided by GPs, giving them the freedom to work extra sessions securely and without the worry of additional costs.
New Primary Care Networks Animation
NHS England has produced a short animation to explain the concept of primary care networks (PCNs) and this new way of working. The film sets out in simple terms how a PCN enables health and other services to work together to provide care for populations of around 30-50,000, with pooled staff and resources, improved record sharing, and better access for patients.

The BMA has published the results from its major pan-professional members’ survey, which highlights the extraordinary high workload pressures all doctors are experiencing. This is particularly the case in general practice with the survey finding that GPs are more likely to highlight excessive workload pressures than colleagues in hospital (91% vs 72%).
GP at Hand Ads Banned Over Misleading Patients
Digital health provider GP at Hand has had advertisements banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) after they failed to make it clear that patients signing up to the service would have to deregister from their family doctor. The ASA also criticised the provider, championed by health and social care secretary Matt Hancock, for its claim in adverts on the Tube and Facebook that patients could "see a GP in minutes" when the registration period could actually last weeks.
