Welcome to the first edition of the DDLMC News Bulletin!

New DDLMC Staff


Sandra Clarkson
Sandra is DDLMC's new Project Coordinator. She provides support on multiple projects under Derby and Derbyshire LMC's umbrella services arm, the General Practice Task Force. She will work closely with the Project Leads to provide project and administration support.

Louise Thornley
Louise is DDLMC's new Business and Administration Support Apprentice. She is undertaking an apprenticeship programme with the LMC and will provide administrative and clerical support to Derby and Derbyshire LMC and office colleagues.

The elected members and officers of Derby and Derbyshire LMC remain at the heart of the organisation. Acting under the elected members’ direction, the LMC liaises, engages and negotiates with and between NHS North Midlands, Public Health, Commissioning Managers, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and GP Practices.

Non-Essential and Enhanced Services – DDLMC Information

Accepting inappropriate and un-resourced work that is being shifted from other providers risks undermining the quality of patient care in general practice.

Coroner’s Inquest Advice for GPs

Most GPs will be called upon to write a Coroner’s report during their career, and some will be called to attend the Coroner’s Court as a witness.

Even the most experienced GPs find the call to attend an inquest daunting. It can be difficult to know what to do, where to get help and how to behave. It can also be difficult to know how to support a colleague going through this process. This guide and flowchart has been designed with the help of the Coroner’s office and local GPs who have been through the process to help you understand what happens and signpost you to sources of help.

Joined Up Care Derbyshire (JUCD) also known as, Derbyshire’s Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP), brings together NHS organisations and local councils from across the county and city to coordinate health and social care services better to support people to stay well using the resources we have in the most efficient and effective way.

Police Access to records under GDPR

DDLMC have been asked by some practices whether the process for providing access to medical records to the police has changed since the introduction of GDPR (and the associated DPA 2018). We have confirmed with the BMA that GDPR makes no change to the extant procedures and guidance which is included on our website as this link. Self-care and OTC medications

As you know there is an increasing drive towards promoting self-care and reducing prescribing of OTC medications across the country. This is aimed at conditions that are considered to be self-limiting and do not need treatment as they will heal of their own accord, and those which lend themselves to self-care and can be treated by an OTC medicine.

We have had a number of queries so would like to direct Practices for the BMA advice on this issue, which we fully support.

PCSE New Regional Liaison Manager and Update on Queries Process

Rob Ramsden from PCSE has notified us of some changes to their liaison team as he has been promoted to become Head of Customer Engagement with the National Engagement Team. In addition there has been some concerns raised about the process for PCSE closing queries and Julie Powdrell has provided clarification for practices. Click here to read.

HAVE YOUR SAY: Consultation on proposed merger of four Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Groups (25 July - 14 August 2018)

The four Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are seeking the views of local patients and organisations on proposals to merge into a single organisation. The aim is to strengthen how CCG staff work efficiently together, to commission services which are equally available to all residents across the county and to make the best use of the money available to the local NHS.You can find more information and give your views by using the following web link. The consultation will run until Tuesday, 14 August 2018.

Further to this, two public meetings have been scheduled to discuss the proposal.

Management of Dyspepsia - Amendment to Clinical Pathway

An amendment to the Clinical Pathway for the Management of Dyspepsia was agreed by the Derbyshire Joint Area Prescribing Committee (JAPC) which came into effect from September 2017. The pathway is available on Derbyshire Meds Management Prescribing and Guidelines website and the Primary Care website.

The Derbyshire CCG’s are very keen to promote and communicate the amended pathway across Primary Care in Derbyshire, as widely as possible.

Building Leadership for Inclusion - Senior Influencers' Groups

As you know across health and care, the workforce is increasingly diverse and yet this diversity is significantly underrepresented in senior leadership roles. Recent reports by the King’s Fund and yearly NHS staff surveys, highlight that bullying, harassment and discrimination is still the daily norm for many staff with protected characteristics in the NHS.

The Building Leadership for Inclusion vision is to radically challenge and transform leadership cultures across NHS funded services, shifting existing leadership approaches, attitudes and behaviours in order to place inclusion and equality at the very heart of how ‘good leadership’ is defined across health and care systems in England. Top GP will help spread innovations to join up NHS health and social care

A specialist GP has been appointed to help spread NHS innovations which integrate health and social care throughout England. Dr Karen Kirkham, who runs a practice in Dorset and specialises in women’s health, will work with the wider GP community to spread tried and tested innovation and transformation techniques across the country. NHSE - National General Practice Bulletin

NHS England has relaunched its national monthly Bulletin, which provides resources on health policy and practice for GPs and the primary care audience, including practice managers and nurses. You can subscribe on the NHS England website.
Dr Arvind Madan, Deputy Medical Director, NHS England and Director of Primary Care, NHS England has released the following statement statement through the GP Bulletin.

Low Value Appraisal Guidance

A new guidance on supporting doctors who undertake a low volume of NHS general practice clinical work has been launched by NHS England and is available here. Mark Sanford-Wood, GPC England deputy chair, has also written a blog about the new guidance, which can be accessed here.

New Clinical Roles

A guide to new clinical roles has been published on the BMA website. It has been designed to provide members with a broad outline of the new clinical roles that are emerging across the NHS, such as Physician Associates (PAs), Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) and Clinical Pharmacists. It also provides suggestions of further reading.

Employer handbook – brought to you by the BMA.
The handbook is written for members who employ staff directly.

As an employer the BMA are there to help you with:

  • Your responsibilities as an employer
  • Providing initial guidance on the appropriate steps to follow
  • Explaining the legal framework that you are required to work within as an employer
  • Example policies, contracts etc that can be adapted to your individual requirements
  • Giving you best practice advice

Compensation for Capita Failure
